Microsoft released Windows 11 and Windows 10 updates that broke the VPN after it was installed. Microsoft has not yet admitted to the problem, although it is a serious issue that is likely to spread. Microsoft does not permit you to delete these patches. There is no solution. Microsoft released other dangerous updates to Windows Server 2012, 2019, and 2022.
Windows users are now without a VPN
Windows 10 and Windows 11 latest updates released Microsoft Last Tuesday, January 11, 2022, the VPN was broken. Bleeping Computer profiles port indicate that the problem is in the Windows 10 index updates KB5009543 and KB5009566 respectively.
Patches can cause Windows to stop using the VPN tool. Other third-party solutions can also fail – this problem affects at least Cisco Meraki, WatchGuard Firewalls, and SonicWall.
However, the problem is not present in all users. It’s difficult to determine how severe it is. It causes VPN connections to stop working and users to try to create new connections do not succeed.
Instead of accessing VPN, users get this message
Microsoft had not acknowledged the issue and offered no solutions at the time the material was published. Users are discussing bug fixes on third-party sites and on the forums at the software giant.
Timid tries to solve the problem
The listed updates could be fixed in one of three ways at the time this article was published. The first is to eliminate them entirely from the system.
To do this, numerous specialized resources suggest using the “wusa / uninstall / kb: 5009543” script for Windows 10 and “wusa / uninstall / kb: 5009566” for Windows 11, which must be activated via the command line.
VPN operation logs are not helpful in solving the problem
This method may seem reliable but it does not always work. CNews editors discovered a post on Microsoft forums in which many users pointed out its total ineffectiveness.
According to them, attempting to run the script will result in an error message. Windows considers these updates essential and blocks them from being deleted.
Based on user messages, other scripts or their variations also fail to produce the desired result. Unwanted patches are already firmly embedded in Windows’ “body”, so we will have to wait until Microsoft releases a patch for it.
You can also roll back to an earlier version of the system by using shadow copies or restore points. This is only possible for people who have activated both of these options.
Visual proof of incompatibility of the method with scripts
Third, disable automatic Windows update. This is useful if your system has not had the time to download and install any potentially harmful updates. Microsoft does not like this. Windows 10 and Windows 11 don’t have this option by default. Third-party software, or manual editing of the registry and policies can be used to disable this option.
Quintet for Dangerous Updates
Microsoft released at most five updates on January 11, 2022. These updates significantly complicated the lives and work of users. Patch KB5009543 was released along with KB5009566.
This update may cause issues with HyperV virtual machines as well as with recognition of drives using the ReFS File System (local file system used by Windows Server 2012 and later, Windows 8 and later). The same problems are caused by the Windows Server 2019 and 2022 updates KB5009557, KB5009555 and KB5009555.
Distribution of Microsoft Updates dangerous to users of server operating system
Windows domain controllers also restarted in a circular manner after the last two updates. These issues are widely discussed in third-party groups. As of January 14th, 2022, there was no solution.
Microsoft operating systems have a bad reputation for updating.
Over the past six-and-a-half years since Windows 10 was released, hundreds of updates have been made to the system. Many of these updates have broken one of its functions. For example: Published A March 2021 update disabling the backup system, webcams and other features caused the upgrade to fail. Users of Windows 10 versions prior to March 2021 were able to access the backup system and webcams again in December 2020. Face A strange error led to a “bluescreen death” due to carelessness in using the Chkdsk utility for disk checking.
Sometimes, automatic updates can be disabled for more benefits than harm.
Windows 11, which started distribution in October 2021 and has seen a number of problems over the course of its existence, has also picked up some problematic patches. Some, like the issue with AMD processor performance, were already in beta testing. The first large-scale update did not fix the problem, but it even worsened it.
The KB5006674 Windows 11 update, which was released in mid-October 2021 disabled Brother and Samsung printers. Microsoft only acknowledged the problem two weeks later.
