Microsoft already knows about the problem
Windows users report an annoying problem with Microsoft Edge browser. It keeps appearing on their desktops, despite the fact that they have manually deleted the shortcut.
Microsoft has acknowledged that the problem exists, but many think that this is just one of several attempts to persuade Windows users not to use the proprietary browser.
This can lead to very negative reviews. For example, one Reddit user wrote: “Edge is back on my desktop for the second time. Microsoft will soon realize that Edge is not liked by anyone. Another user replied: “They already understand that no one likes and does not need Edge. They do it because they understand that Edge is not for everyone.
Others have reported that Edge updates cause the shortcut to be added to the desktop. Reports claim that deleting a shortcut will cause a new one to be created, so many people hide it. This is a common complaint for Windows 10 and Windows 11.
It isn’t just for those who choose Microsoft’s rival browser. For example, another Reddit user complained: “I keep deleting the shortcut, but it keeps reinstalling. Edge is my default browser, but having to always remove it from my desktop is pretty annoying.”
Greg Carmack, an independent consultant to Microsoft Community Forum, suggested a solution to the problem. He noted that Edge’s autoload can be disabled in Task Manager. This seems to cause the shortcut to keep returning after each restart.
