Twitter has removed ads that implicitly or explicitly deny climate change science consensus. This is similar to the action taken by Google in October 2021 on similar ads. This is reported in StatementThe blog was posted by Sean Boyle (Chief Sustainability Officer) and Casey Junod (Global Manager for Sustainability).
Blog states that the ban is in compliance with the inappropriate content policy. “We believe that global warming denial should not be monetized on Twitter, and that misleading ads should not detract from important conversations about the climate crisis. Our new policy will be implemented based on data from authoritative sources, such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change Assessment Reports.”Top management of the company stated that misleading information on climate change could harm efforts to protect the planet.
The announcement was made on Earth Day, just hours before the European Union adopted the Digital Services Act (DSA). This law requires large tech companies to do more in order to protect European users against illegal content. They face heavy fines.
