Sony announced that the PlayStation 5 will now support Variable Responsive Rate (VRR) technology. This technology improves visual performance by eliminating or reducing artifacts like screen tearing and jagged frame rates. Many projects for the PlayStation 5 will be smoother and input lag will drop. VRR will be only available for HDMI 2.1 compatible TVs or monitors.
Sony noted that VRR support can be added to previously released games, and that future games could also receive this technology right away. The company published a list of the games that will be receiving updates with VRR support within the “coming weeks”.
- Astro’s Playroom;
- Vanguard, Call of Duty
- Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War
- Destiny 2
- Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
- DIRT 5
- godfall;
- Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered;
- Miles Morales, Marvel’s Spider-Man;
- Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart;
- Resident Evil Village;
- Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
- Tribes of Midgard
A global firmware update will make VRR support available for the PlayStation 5 console in the coming days. The update will only be available if the set-top boxes are connected to the internet. VRR support will only be available to games that are natively compatible. This function can be disabled in the Set-Top Box settings in the Screen and Videos > Video Output> VRR section.
Remember that VRR will be supported by the Microsoft Xbox Series X or Series S consoles starting in 2020.
