Since years, rumors have circulated that Apple would use the USB-C port on iPhones. Yesterday, reports claimed that Apple is testing these devices. Bloomberg did not publish the information.
iPhone with USB-C – When?
Mark Gurman (the author of the article) stated that iPhones with USB C would be available in 2023. That means that models this year will still include a Lightning port.
Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst, published similar information at the start of the week. He said that the port will be changed only for the next-year’s models.
New Radio Directive
We should remind ourselves that work was underway to amend the EU radio directive last year. Producers of electronic equipment, not just smartphones, will be required to use one standard port. It is USB-C. Wireless charging devices will be an exception. This port will be sufficient to retrofit the devices in their cases.
Apple’s future plans are not yet clear. Apple could decide to launch a European version or make a global shift. Devices with Lightning ports could be sold in other countries, but for now.
Accessory and adapters
Gurman also stated that Apple is currently testing an adapter to allow iPhones and other Apple devices to be used with Lightning-compatible accessories.
This adapter will likely be sold separately by Apple, which will make it a profitable business. Users’ wallets won’t suffer. It will cost less than buying all the accessories and replacing them. Apple has a great opportunity here, but it also poses a threat.
Apple’s influence over the iPhone accessories market will be reduced by the new regulations entering into effect. Apple now recommends certified accessories bearing the “Made for Apple” logo.
Apple must certifiy the logo on the packaging of Lightning devices.
