Seagate has introduced the second generation MACH.2 hard drives. They feature two separate heads that deliver exceptional performance. Exos models 2X16 and Exos 18 have capacities of 16 TB and 18 TB respectively. This makes them the fastest HDDs in the world. These new models will be available in SATA (6 GB / s), and SAS (12 GB / s interfaces.
The host can define Exos 2X16 or 2X18 hard drives, with capacities of 18 TB and 16, TB, as two separate logical drives with respective capacities of 9 and 8TB. These novelties are based on traditional CMR magnetic recording and have sealed chambers filled with helium. 7200 rpm is the spindle speed of Exos 2X16 models and Exos 2X18 model.
SAS HDD versions have a sequential read speed maximum of 554MB/s. SATA HDD versions have a sequential read speed maximum of 545MB/s. They are the fastest HDDs on the market in both cases. Performance for random write and read operations in blocks containing 4 KB for new products are 304 and 560 respectively. The average latency is 4.16ms. The sector size is 512 bytes and the hard disk buffer memory has 256 MB. We also note that the MACH.2 Exos 2X14 of the previous generation provided a speed limit of 524MB/s.
The SAS and SATA versions are 8 and 7.8 watts respectively in idle mode. Random reading and writing data is stored in blocks of 4 KB and 9.6 W, respectively. The devices are designed to operate in the temperature range from +5 to +60 °C. Time from failure – 2.5 Million hours. They come with a five year manufacturer’s guarantee.
Exos 2X16 or Exos 2X18 hard drives prices are not provided by the manufacturer. These new items are intended for corporate customers who require increased storage system performance in 24/7 mode.
