Between 8 and 10 May, in the vicinity of the villages of Hryhorivka and Biłohorivka, Russian troops made another attempt to cross the Donets River in order to outflank the Ukrainian forces in Donbas. Although you may have heard it before, new information regarding this topic led us to update our previous reports.

The latest photos and information regarding the crossing of Donets River by at most one (or two) brigades from the Russian army shows the process through the eyes of a Ukrainian soldier and an officer in engineering troops. He posted a tweet about the Russians’ attempts to cross the Donets River on May 7. The Russians then sought out the most suitable location to build a bridge.
Because of the harsh conditions, he knew that Russia would need to engage motor boats. It would take around two hours to erect the eight 10-meter bridge components. The information provided by the Russians allowed the commanders on the “their” side to prepare for the Russians. They actually started their operation at this location on May 8. They used smoke grenades and fog from nearby burning forests to disguise themselves.

The Ukrainians did NOT attack immediately. They waited for the right time to fight the enemy vehicles on the other side and constructed a bridgehead. Heavy artillery from Ukraine, which had been sent to protect this area by earlier intelligence, was called in to the action after the first fights. The Russians were in the midst of chaos just as the final 8 blocks were laid.

Russia suffered enormous losses throughout the day of fighting. They tried at all cost to get to the Donets River on the southern side. The Russian forces trying to take over the other bank started to retreat over the destroyed pontoon bridge. They then attempted to build another bridge but were also destroyed. The Ukrainian air force arrived and ended the game. It killed up to 1,500 Russians, and took away 84 vehicles from the Russian army, including 73 tanks. However, it is hard to estimate accurately in such a short amount of time.
