Although computers based on Arm processors have been around for years, the combination of Windows and Arm is not as well-known as that which uses the x86 architecture. Qualcomm is still releasing more powerful chipsets to laptops. During the 2022 Snapdragon Summit it was announced that new CPUs were being developed for Windows laptops. He also suggested that Arm solutions and additional modules to process AI algorithms are key components of the future Windows PC.
The x86 architecture depends on two main components to computing – CPU & GPU. Therefore, when working intensively with artificial intelligence algorithms, both types can experience large loads and consume a lot of energy. For AI-related tasks, Snapdragon chipsets rely on a Hexagon Digital Signal Processor. The main processors’ resources are thus freed up for other purposes.
Qualcomm was supported at the Snapdragon Summit by Adobe, Citi, and Microsoft. Microsoft pointed out that the SQ3 chipset was used in the Surface Pro 9 5G. It has many AI-enabled capabilities, including the ability to blur background during video chats and the ability for the camera to keep contact with the user no matter where they are relative to the lens.
Adobe has already added AI support powered Snapdragon by Sensei to Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere Pro. According to the company, Snapdragon AI engines will improve Creative Cloud applications in 2023. Citi isn’t using any yet, but it reportedly plans on moving 70% of its workforce onto Qualcomm-based mobile computers such the Lenovo ThinkPad X13s.
Today’s Snapdragon chipsets use CPU cores made under Qualcomm’s Kryo brand. Initial, the company employed its own architecture but switched to Arm Cortex ready-made solutions later. Qualcomm now announces that the Oryon family will be available for notebooks.
According to Qualcomm, the new platform will be the first platform to emerge from the acquisition of NUVIA. This could possibly form the basis for the next generation computing platform the Snapdragon 8cx Gen 4. Oryon also uses a custom instruction set-based architectural design. Arm, although it is not among the available ready-made solutions. The company said that the product would be available for sale starting in 2023.
