Last week, Google announced that it would reduce 12,000 employees. This represents 6% of its workforce. CNBC reports that 1,845 employees will be cut in Google’s US state, California. It will also take on 15% of the cuts.
Many workers will lose jobs in or near Google Silicon Valley headquarters. 1,436 job openings are being eliminated at Google’s Mountain View headquarters. Additional 119 people will lose jobs in San Bruno where YouTube is located, while 53 employees will be fired in Palo Alto.
The dismissal process will begin on March 31, 2023. California law requires employees to be notified in writing at least 60 days prior to the commencement of mass layoffs and/or the closing of the company. According to the company, employees who are laid off during these 60 days will still receive their full salary.
Over 25% of the job losses in San Francisco Bay Area were due to the absence of “director” and “senior” titles. 26 massage therapists were also laid off: 24 in Mountain View, 3 in Los Angeles, and one in Irvine. Los Angeles’ Playa Vista campus has 177 jobs and Irvine has 60.
Sundar Pichai (head of the company) explained that the intense growth during the acute phase was followed immediately by a completely new economic reality: a slowdown and increased risks of recession.
