Apple was hit with a lawsuit alleging its blood oxygen sensor doesn’t accurately report dark skin users.
New York’s Saturday lawsuit highlights decades worth of research that suggests that oximeter technology does not work when it comes to measuring blood oxygen levels for dark skinned users.
Alex Morales, the plaintiff, stated that he bought an Apple Watch in 2020-2021. Although he was aware of the functionality for blood oxygen measurement, he didn’t think it would be a problem for dark-skinned people.
Apple claims the blood oxygen feature, which is available on the Apple Watch Series 6 since its inception, uses four clusters a LED lights on the back to compensate natural skin variations.
Photodiodes read the reflected light and reflect it. The photodiodes transmit this information to Blood Oxygen, which uses color variations to determine the SpO2 blood oxygen level.
The lawsuit was brought on behalf watch users in New York. Morales has also sent similar lawsuits in the same way to other American states. /PCWorld Albanian
