Trendfocus, an analytics agency, published statistics on HDD shipment of the top brands in 2022. The Big Three Big Three (Seagate, Toshiba, and WDC) were disappointed by the numbers. Experts gave predictions for the most popular market segments and spoke out about the reasons behind this phenomenon.
This table displays the dynamic of shipments for each company in 2022. The Y/Y columns indicate the changes in supply year to year. Over the past 12 month, Seagate has shipped 43.7% more hard drives than 2021. Toshiba dropped 39.3%, while WDC fell 43%.
Trendfocus points out that the number of HDDs shipped has fallen by 35-36million. Analysts believe that such statistics are due to a decrease in corporate cloud storage services demand – only this market segment has contributed to the drop in supplies of 10-11 million hard drives.
Furthermore, HDDs have become less popular with ordinary consumers. The fourth quarter 2022 market recovery was not predicted by 3.5-inch manufacturers. Growth was only shown by 2.5-inch hard drives (+15%) in the fourth quarter. TrendForce analysts blame this on the recent season of winter holidays. Their calculations show that the market share in laptops with HDD is expected to decline to 4% by this year.
