Tantalus Media and Forgotten Empires announced the release date of Knights of the Mediterranean DLC, Age of Empires III: Definitive edition. The strategy will include Civilizations in Italy and Malta, which includes the first set historical maps and two new modes. Other content will be added to the strategy by Forgotten Empires on May 26th.

To optimize your economy, pawn resources from the pawnshop or build a magnificent basilica and strengthen your army with papal troops. Knights of the Mediterranean will be adding two new civilizations:
- 9 new minor civilizations are founded on the royal houses from various European countries.
- 30 random cards added
- There are two new modes: Tycoon in which you can win through economic superiority and Diplomacy in which you can negotiate with other users in multiplayer (the first supports all random maps).
- 8 historical maps, new versions of random maps with an unique purpose based upon the famous military conflicts throughout Europe: Flood, Great Turkish War and Eighty Years War.

Pre-orders for the add-on are already available in Microsoft Store and Steam. The game is not yet available in Russia on the Valve website.
Age of Empires III: The Definitive Edition was released October 15, 2020 for PC (available via Xbox Game Pass). This re-release received mixed reactions. It received a Metacritic score 75/100 and a Steam Score 78% based upon over 227,000 reviews. The most common complaints were those regarding optimization and poor graphics.
The developers have already released three paid upgrades – one with North American civilizations and Mexico civilizations and another with The African Royals that included two more civilizations (Ethiopians/Hausas), new historical battles and African maps, and other content.
