AMD launches new chips at CES 2023
AMD used CES to launch a slew if new products, mostly laptop and desktop-specific chips. The company unveiled new processors for laptops from the Dragon Range, Phoenix Point and the Ryzen 7000X3D models.
Ryzen 7040 Series
The Ryzen 7040 Phoenix Point models have 4-nanometer architecture and are suitable for premium and super-slim laptops. The Ryzen 9 794HS high-end chip has 8 cores, 16 threads, and a maximum frequency at 5.2Ghz.
Performance Claims
Lisa Su, AMD CEO, stated that the Ryzen chips perform 30% better than the Apple M1 Pro. The processor runs 34% faster than the M1 Pro, according to statistics. AMD claimed that Ryzen 7040 can provide up to 30+ hours battery life when watching videos on ultra-small laptops.
Comparing to Apple M1 Pro
The Ryzen 9 9 7940HS was faster in Blender than the Apple M1 Pro. AMD however did not compare their chip to the Apple M1 Max. The company claimed that it was the Apple M1 Max with 32GB RAM, 1TB SSD.
Accessibility
The first Ryzen 7040 series laptops will be available in March 2023. Apple is preparing to launch the M2 Pro & M2 Max at the end of this year.
